Kalamazoo, MI- Special teams played a keyed role during the 6th Annual Orange Ice Game, as the Toledo Walleye register five power-play markers en route to a 6-5 victory during the 6th Annual Orange Ice Game.

Striking quickly, Rick Cleaver (4th) registered his first of two goals in the game 1:08 into the game to give the K-Wings an early 1-0 lead.  

Toledo tied the contest minutes later with a power-play goal from Walleye captain Ryan Stokes (1st). Tommy Lange (2nd) joined in on the scoring barrage knocking in a rebound to give the Walleye a 2-1 advantage. 

Not to be outdone, Trent Daavettila (5th) evened the score up at 2-2 with a man-advantage goal with just less than three minutes remaining in the period. Daavettila has now registered six points in his last three games (4 goals, 2 assists).

In the second, Toledo regained the lead 1:32 into the period with a goal from Evan Rankin (2nd).

Kalamazoo’s power-play returned the favor tying the contest at 3-3 with a marker from Mathieu Curadeau (4th).

Storming back Maxime Tanguay (3rd, 4th) pushed the Walleye ahead by two goals scoring twice on the power-play.

Bringing the deficit to a single-goal, Matt Jones (3rd) kissed a wrister off the pipe and over the goal line to knock the Toledo lead to 5-4.

Early in the third period, Dominic Osman (2nd) extended the Walleye lead back to two goals with the team’s fifth power-play tally of the night.

Kalamazoo’s power-play unit battle the K-Wings back to a single goal, as a Ryan McGinnis blast from the point sailed off the end wall and back to the stick of Cleaver (5th), who punched in his second the game.

With the K-Wings trailing 6-5 with under two minutes remaining and with a man-advantage, Kalamazoo pulled goaltender Julien Ellis for the extra skater; however, Osman (3rd) rifled a loose puck down the length of the ice to registered the shorthanded insurance marker.

The teams combined for eight power-play goals, with Kalamazoo going 3 for 7 with the advantage and Toledo going a staggering 5 for 8.

The loss was the first for the K-Wings, who are now 6-1-0-0 and remain in first in the North Division. Kalamazoo has also dropped four straight on Orange Ice and has an overall record of 1-4-0-0 on the pumpkin colored surface.

Kalamazoo will begin a three-game road swing this Wednesday, November 4th with a 10:30 a.m. face-off against Toledo.

The K-Wings will return to Wings Stadium Friday, November 13th with a 7:30 p.m. encounter versus the Cincinnati Cyclones on Word of Life Night. The game on November 13th will also be the K-Wings first Frugal Fan Friday, which features $1 beer and $1 hot dogs.
